The buoyancy staircase limit in surface quasigeostrophic turbulence

چکیده

Surface buoyancy gradients over a quasigeostrophic fluid permit the existence of surface-trapped Rossby waves. The interplay these waves with surface turbulence results in latitudinally inhomogeneous mixing that, under certain conditions, culminates staircase: meridional profile consisting mixed zones punctuated by sharp gradients, eastward jets centred at and weaker westward flows between. In this article, we investigate emergence staircase limit examine dependence resulting dynamics on vertical stratification. Over decreasing stratification ( $\mathrm {d}N(z)/\mathrm {d}z\leq 0$ , where $N(z)$ is frequency), obtain longer interaction range (than uniform stratification) highly dispersive limit, find straight that are perturbed propagating along jet waves, similar to two-dimensional barotropic $\beta$ -plane turbulence. contrast, increasing {d}z\geq ), shorter weakly sinuous large latitudinal meanders whose shape evolves time due propagation These have larger amplitudes than stratification, and, as result, ratio domain-averaged zonal speeds two three times smaller Finally, for given Rhines wavenumber, closer together

Surface quasigeostrophic turbulence: The study of an active scalar.

We study the statistical and geometrical properties of the potential temperature (PT) field in the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) system of equations. In addition to extracting information in a global sense via tools such as the power spectrum, the g-beta spectrum, and the structure functions we explore the local nature of the PT field by means of the wavelet transform method. The primary indic...

Energy budgets in Charney-Hasegawa-Mima and surface quasigeostrophic turbulence.

We study energy transfer in unbounded Charney-Hasegawa-Mima and surface quasigeostrophic turbulence. The possible inverse-cascading quantities in these systems are, respectively, I identical with integral ( infinity )(0)k(-2)E(k) dk and J identical with integral ( infinity )(0)k(-1)E(k) dk, where E(k) is the kinetic energy spectrum. The supposed direct-cascading quantities for both surface quas...

Stochastic superparameterization in quasigeostrophic turbulence

In this article we expand and develop the authors’ recent proposed methodology for efficient stochastic superparameterization algorithms for geophysical turbulence. Geophysical turbulence is characterized by significant intermittent cascades of energy from the unresolved to the resolved scales resulting in complex patterns of waves, jets, and vortices. Conventional superparameterization simulat...

Energy spectrum of quasigeostrophic turbulence.

We consider the energy spectrum of a quasigeostrophic model of forced, rotating turbulent flow. We provide a rigorous a priori bound E(k)<or=Ck(-2) valid for wave numbers that are smaller than a wave number associated with the forcing injection scale. This upper bound separates this spectrum from the Kolmogorov-Kraichnan k(-5/3) energy spectrum that is expected in a two-dimensional Navier-Stoke...

Dispersion and mixing in quasigeostrophic turbulence.

The dynamics of passive Lagrangian tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is studied numerically and compared with the behavior of two-dimensional barotropic turbulence. Despite the different Eulerian properties of the two flows, the Lagrangian dynamics of passively advected tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is very similar to that of barotropic turbulen...
